Throughout the history of art the window has been used as both a literal and symbolic element. Literally, windows create space, bring light, and become a compositional tool. Symbolically, they serve as a passage, a mystery, a gateway between worlds.
Photographers have utilized the window since photography’s inception. One of William Henry Fox Talbot’s first photographs was of a latticed window. Of course, light and photography go hand in hand, and the window has been used as the perfect lighting tool for many photographers and as a frame for others. As a metaphor, it has been used as a reference for either looking out to the world or inward looking within ourselves.
